In this episode, we explore the letter F, which stands for facial recognition. Get ready to discover how computers can recognize faces just like we do. Let's get started. So what is facial recognition?

Speaker 1:

Facial recognition is a technology that helps computers recognize and remember faces, just like you recognize your friends at school. Can you think of a time when you recognized someone by their face? Who was it and where did you see them? How does facial recognition work? Computers use cameras to capture images of faces and look at features like eyes, nose and mouth. Special algorithms, which we already learned about in AS for Algorithm, help the computer compare faces and see if they can match pictures. It already knows and it's already learned. The crazy thing is, facial recognition is already all around us. It's used to unlock phones, so many phones use facial recognition to unlock, letting you in with just the look. It also helps with finding photos, so there are apps that can find and sort photos of people you know by recognizing your face or the faces of your friends. If you look in your parents' iPhone or in their droids and things like that, they're already sorting pictures and finding photographs of people using facial recognition. Also using security systems, so cameras use facial recognition to keep places safe by recognizing people who are allowed to enter.

Speaker 1:

So let me share some fun facts about facial recognition. Facial recognition can work in just seconds as fast as you blink. Some facial recognition systems can also recognize pets Isn't that crazy? And then facial recognition. It gets better and is used in many, many new and exciting ways as it continues to grow as a technology. So how do AI and facial recognition work together? That's easy One it learns faces. Ai learns to recognize faces by looking at a lot of pictures and finding patterns in those pictures. It also improves with practice. The more faces AI sees, the better it gets at recognizing them accurately. It also helps people. Ai can help find lost pets, identify missing persons and even make games more fun with personalized features.

Speaker 1:

So let's play a game. Are you ready to play the let's Play a Face Match game? Great, what you're going to need is printed photos of family members and friends. I know it's often hard to have real pictures because a lot of our pictures are on our phone, but if there's a way to print those photos out, please do it for this game. If not, feel free to take pictures out of a magazine or old magazine to drive around. Next, you're gonna mix up the photos and lay them on the table. Then I want you to pick a photo and see how quickly you can match it to the right person. Try this game with friends or family and see who can match faces the fastest.

Speaker 1:

As always, there's bad facial recognition and I want you to know a few things. Like any other technology, facial recognition must be used carefully and respectfully. It's important to think about privacy and make sure your face data we learned about the deeper data before, which is information about your face, is also protected. So don't just upload your picture or your face in any old app. Make sure you're working with your parents and not uploading pictures or images of yourself without permission from your parents. You don't want to have a AI train on your face data in a bad app. How to stay safe Always use trusted devices. Make sure the devices you use facial recognition on are secure and from trusted sources. Also, before using someone's photo and facial recognition apps, you have to ask for their permission, and if you're using your photo as well, you need to talk to your parents about that.

Speaker 1:

So what's next? I want you to imagine a world where facial recognition helps make things easier and safer. What fun or helpful uses can you think of? Easier and safer? What fun or helpful uses can you think of? Share your thoughts with someone nearby and dream up the future of facial recognition together. You could also try other activities at home with your parents, friends or guardians. You can explore how facial recognition works on a device at home like a smartphone or tablet, and talk about how it keeps your information safe. So I hope you've enjoyed this adventure with the letter F for facial recognition. Keep that curiosity alive and join us next time as we continue to explore the ABC's AI. Have a good one, stay curious. Bye-bye. Thank you for joining us as we explore the fascinating world of artificial intelligence. Don't keep this adventure to yourself.
